Eastham, MA To Host 2018 Turnip Festival In November

Talk about a homegrown festival! A row of nice big turnips.The wonderfully quirky Turnip Festival here in Eastham, Massachusetts, is a celebration of a humble root vegetable. This year’s festival, the 15th annual, will be Saturday, November 17, just in time for visitors to discover all the wonderful ways turnips can make their way into Thanksgiving dinner. The afternoon festivities begin with a Blessing of the Turnips and crowning of the Turnip King or Queen.

A lineup of people peeling turnips during the contest.Other activities include a Turnip Shuck-Off to determine who is the master peeler; an Enormous Turnip Weight Guessing Contest; Turnip Cook-Off, offering a chance for sampling this year’s creative dishes; and special fun Kids Zone, turnip body art, and Mr. Turnip Head Decorating Contest.

Entertainment will be by the Higher Ground String Band. Look for an array of local artisan gifts, handcrafts, books, and of course, Eastham turnips for sale. And for those who want a little something to eat besides turnips, there will be a selection of other savory and sweet foods.
