Rock Harbor is a man-made harbor on Cape Cod Bay. Located on the west side, the harbor dips in at the border of Orleans and Eastham, MA. Today the harbor is one of the Cape’s many scenic locations and a popular tourist spot, but it also played a small role in our history. During the War of 1812 a small battle between British soldiers and local militia took place here. In 1814 Orleans militia were successful in preventing a British warship docking in the harbor.
On your visit, don’t miss Rock Harbor and the 4 Things to See and Do in Rock Harbor Orleans:
- Take a low tide walk
When the tide is low, you can walk out for a mile over the sands that appear in shades of pink. Notice the tiny hermit crabs and other sea creatures that remain in the sand awaiting the return of the tide. The tides pull back far enough for you to walk out to the young pine trees that were planted in the harbor as vessel guides. This is an amazing experience so don’t forget to check the tide chart!
