Cape Cod is a beautiful place to visit in the winter months. While staying with us at Whalewalk Inn & Spa, we suggest these 3 Itineraries for Perfect Winter Getaways. Each are less than 35 miles from the inn and can be enjoyed in one day.
A Trip to Sandwich – spend the day in The oldest town
Only a short 35 mile drive from Whalewalk Inn & Spa is Sandwich, a picturesque New England town that was settled in 1637 and is steeped in historic charm. Visitors can spend the day walking the beautiful streets lined with colonial buildings and visiting local shops and galleries for a step back in time.
To learn more about Sandwich, visit Sandwich Glass Museum. This museum proudly interprets the long history of Sandwich with its exhibits and collections. Sandwich was established over 300 years ago by the English who sustained the town by exporting timber. This continued until 1825 when a Boston businessman named Deming Jarves opened a glass factory in town. Mr. Jarves made his factory extremely successful and today Sandwich is largely defined by American Glass production. Don’t miss the glassblowing demonstrations and museum gift shop for beautiful glass ornaments, jewelry, vases and more.
Fritz Glass is another popular glass shop in Sandwich. Fritz Glass has been offering unique glass pieces since 1991. For more shopping visit some local antique stores like Sandwich Antiques Center, Maypop Antiques and for those that really love treasure hunting, the Sandwich Flea Market. This antique shopping paradise is only open from April to October so make sure to make that part of your summer plans!
Sandwich’s beaches are also popular during the off-season months. Take a stroll down Town Beach, Spring Hill Beach and East Beach for the beautiful sunsets. Beaches are easily accessible and offer parking for a day-fee.
Day trip to Provincetown – a spirited town all year around!
Provincetown is approximately 24 miles from Eastham, and well worth the drive. Settled in 1620 by Pilgrims from the Mayflower, Provincetown has grown into a very popular summer vacation destination. The winter months are quieter and the pace is slower, but by no means does that mean Provincetown is a ghost town! Because of the town’s eclectic vibe, there are plenty of concerts, art exhibits, theatre plays and more. Many restaurants remain open and serving a variety of delicious fare.
For the holidays, don’t miss the Lobster Pot Tree in Lopes Square! Or the First Light Provincetown New Year’s Eve Celebration. Starting on December 30 through January 2 there will be activities and entertainment at all times of the day and night. Don’t miss the polar bear plunge on January 1st or the firework display on January 2nd!
A day of nature – Layer up and take a nature trail
Cape Cod Rail Trail is a 22-mile former railroad right-of-way that is ideal for biking or walking. The paved Rail Trail starts in Wellfleet and runs to South Dennis. The trail is mainly flat with very few grades. This trail covers many areas so expect to see a variety of scenic landscapes along the way.
Cape Cod National Seashore is 40 miles of preserved beaches, waterways and trails located on the outer Cape. Created by John F. Kennedy in the early 1960s, CCNS offers many trails that travel through 44,600 acres. Buttonbush Trail, Fort Hill Trail, Red Maple Trail, Doane Loop Trail and Nauset Marsh Trail are conveniently located in Eastham.
